Werewolf Powers
Note, this is the standard template for werewolves on Mythian Academy! Exceptions are always welcome. In general, individual characters will have varying levels of control and finesse with each ability.

Abilities | Weaknesses

Abilities
  • Wolf shift { Their primary power. Werewolves can physically transform into wolves. Typically, the full moon forces a shift, unless the individual has unusually advanced training or some type of psychological block. With practice, they can also shift voluntarily/on will at other times of the month.

Compared to natural wolves, they are typically about two times larger but this varies between individuals. They are also significantly stronger and faster, capable of burst strength up to approximately 1 ton dead lift.

  • Physical enhancements { In both human and wolf forms, werewolves have enhanced regeneration, strength, speed, and senses, though these are typically more powerful when they shift. They have permanent nightvision, ultrasonic hearing, the capacity to track by scent, and usually heal without a scar. It takes considerably more to get them drunk, high, or tired than a typical human. On average, they eat more than other individuals their size and age.

  • Mind link { An aspect connected to the pack bond (see below), werewolves have an ability to communicate telepathically. The depth of this connection depends on many factors. Newer wolves and more recent pack members usually can only use this while shapeshifted into their wolf form. As the individuals bond more closely, however, they are able to tap into the link even when in human form, and share emotions, images, and other sensory experiences. Private conversations are possible, and all links are initiated by a psychic 'handshake' that the other must accept; however, wolves can always tell when others are conversing nearby, even if they can not discern what exactly is being said. Uncontrolled accidents can happen (see Loss of control in Weaknesses). The maximum range is unclear; in an emergency, a packmate may be able to sense the distress of another from miles away.

  • Howling { Yes, they have cellphones. Sorry, they're going to stand on the rooftops and do it anyway.

  • Pack bond { This is a nebulous and strange power that is hard for wolves to explain, and it varies greatly depending on personalities. In general, however, wolves have an innate desire to get along, work together, and perhaps even a bias in favor of one another. Even in Debate Club, wolves will be tempted to take each other's side.

Even the most jealous and possessive individual will have a harder time refusing to share anything with a packmate, from food to sexual partners. The most callous human may become a fretful, mothering worrywart after the wolf bite. It's not that conflicts don't happen, it's just that they typically end faster and sometimes without any real rationale for the resolution or productive change. Misunderstandings certainly occur, but wolves are inclined to give the benefit of the doubt, and more insight into each other's behaviors than with people outside the pack. Depending on the pack, this instinctual-level bond can do the main share of an alpha's job; followers will tend to fall in line.

That being said, stubbornness, discipline, and psychological resistance can be used to inhibit the bond, or at least limit surrender to the behaviors.

  • Infectious scratch/bite { Some werewolves are born, others are infected by injuries from another wolf. The chances of an infection vary depending on the phase of moon, whether the werewolf was shifted, the intention of the werewolf, the age/control/power of the werewolf, number and severity of bites and scratches, and many other factors. The infection even has a chance of converting other supernaturals into werewolves, usually at the expense of most if not all of their original power.
Weaknesses
  • Harmful substances { Typically, werewolves can be burned or poisoned by silver, wolfsbane, and certain cursed objects. Such injuries are more likely to heal at a reduced rate and leave scars. Notably, most substances that affect humans also affect wolves, merely to a lesser extent proportionate to the dose.

  • Sensory overload { A drawback to enhanced senses!

  • Metabolic fuel { Starvation and deprivation don't seem to take much of a toll at first... until the effects abruptly accelerate and appear massively debilitating. They bounce back quick once they're fed, but metabolism has its costs.

  • Heat, biological urges { It happens twice a year, generally around the same time (late Spring, late Autumn) and fairly predictably— giving knowledgable werewolves plenty of advance notice to prepare. That is, unless something goes wrong. YMMV on RPing knotting, etc.

  • Severed pack bonds { Because pack is so important to the wolves, the loss of such bonds can be extremely damaging. Mental health problems such as depression and anger may arise as a consequence, and physical symptoms such as headaches and fatigue are similarly likely. Even the threat of loss may trigger great anxiety. As with the formation of pack bonds, discipline and practice or willpower can be used to overcome the problems, but it's a hard-won wisdom for most.

  • Repression and loss of control { This may vary greatly from wolf to wolf. Some wolves may be able to shift on will, while others can only manage it during emotional distress and the full moon. In general, the key to a healthy wolf is balance, an acceptance of multiple dualities-- individual and pack; person and wolf; violence and peace; shame and forgiveness; hierarchy and freedom. Going too far off any one end is likely to lead to problems in controlling their powers, whether it's an involuntary shift, telepathic deafness, or even an explosive telepathic feelings barf.
